Rookie ropes cash on final day
GUYMON, Okla. – Amy Ohrt first arrived in this Oklahoma Panhandle community four days ago chasing all the trappings that come with rodeo.
She placed in Wednesday’s breakaway roping competition, finishing tied for sixth in the opening round and collecting $582. Her biggest payday of the week came on the final day of Guymon Pioneer Days Rodeo, when she roped her calf in 2.5 seconds to win the third round and move up to sixth in the aggregate race with a three-run cumulative time of 9.8 seconds.
That was worth nearly $4,800 on bright, sunny and windy afternoon in Guymon. She finished second overall to Oklahoma Panhandle State University alumnae Beau Peterson, a two-time National Finals Breakaway Roping qualifier from Council Grove, Kansas.
“I was just trying to see my start and rope my calf,” said Ohrt, the No. 3 ranked cowgirl in the rookie-of-the-year standings from Victoria, Texas. “The calf I had today was just perfect. He just walked out there and just stalled and waited on me. It was a great calf.
“This is actually my first year here, and it was a great rodeo. I’ll be back next year.”
Pioneer Days Rodeo offers a walking fresh calf for every competitor, meaning the cows go straight to Henry C. Hitch Pioneer Arena from the pasture. They’ve never been through the chute system or been turned out into an expansive stadium. How they react to all that is unknown until it happens.
“I like to just keep going steady,” Ohrt said, who was aided by her partner, a black gelding that put her in position to make a quick throw. “I’ve been roping on him for a couple years now, and this is his setup. He scores great, runs hard. He’s great.”
Peterson had the best overall week in winning the aggregate title. For that, she will be awarded one of the coveted Guymon championship belts. Moreover, the $4,881 she pocketed in familiar territory will count toward a third trip to the breakaway finals in Las Vegas.
Ohrt, though, earned about $500 more, thanks to that 2.5-second run on the final day of the rodeo.
